Frequently Asked Questions
What is RedBuoy?
RedBuoy is a desktop application for commercial lobster fishermen. It tracks your position with GPS, provides offline maps, and lets you log catches - all without an internet connection.
How much does it cost?
More details coming soon
Do I need an internet connection?
No. RedBuoy works fully offline. GPS data comes from your NMEA device, maps are cached locally, and all catch data is stored on your device.
What GPS devices are supported?
Any NMEA 0183-compatible GPS that outputs over serial (RS-232) or UDP network. Most marine GPS units work out of the box.
What about depth sounders?
RedBuoy supports depth and water temperature data from NMEA sounders over serial or UDP. Both GPS and depth can share the same port.
Is there an Android version?
An Android tablet version is in development. The current release is for Windows. Sign up for updates on our contact page.
Where is my data stored?
All your data - catches, GPS tracks, POIs, notes - is stored in a local database on your device. Nothing is sent to the cloud.
Can I back up my data?
Yes. RedBuoy includes a built-in backup feature. You can also copy the database file manually from the app data folder.
How do I update?
You can check for updates in the settings page in app or you can download the latest version from the Downloads page.
